Christmas Future

Christmas Brought Me You
[verse]
The smell of hot chocolate wakes my sleepy head
Rubbing my eyes racing to the living room
The excitement for toys Santa left last night
Its how I feel when I’m near you
[chorus]
I’ve got my happy memories
They’re fantastic well told stories
All my little feelings like breathtaking amusement rides
Make me glad that Christmas Brought Me You
Christmas Brought Me You
[verse]
The snow was blowing during that New York day
Bumping into you while window-shopping
Then serendipity played its faithful part
Its the way it is when I’m near you
[chorus]
I’ve got my happy memories
They’re fantastic well told stories
All my little feelings like breathtaking amusement rides
Make me glad that Christmas Brought Me You
I’ve got my happy memories
They’re fantastic well told stories
All my little feelings like breathtaking amusement rides
Make me glad that Christmas Brought Me You
Christmas Brought Me You
[bridge]
I’m still whispering romantic things in your ear
Like holiday fairytales every day of the year
[chorus]
I’ve got my happy memories
They’re fantastic well told stories
All my little feelings like breathtaking amusement rides
Make me glad that Christmas Brought Me You
I’ve got my happy memories
They’re fantastic well told stories
All my little feelings like breathtaking amusement rides
Make me glad that Christmas Brought Me You
Christmas Brought Me You
Christmas Brought Me You

Song Story:
The first Christmas song I ever wrote. I wasn’t in a super huge rush to write Christmas songs. However, it was quite fun to think about how my childhood went with Christmas when you believed in Santa Claus and figured he really brought us gifts.
I wanted something that was upbeat and acoustic in nature. Started with the acoustic guitar and got a nice flowing riff. That riff is a 3 figure over a 4 beat (musicians will likely understand that). Which isn’t something that is normal for Christmas music. It’s also in an alternate tuning which helps the riff flow easier. Once I had that, it was easy to flesh out the rest of the song with the other parts.
Lyrically it follows that vibe of mixing childhood wonderment and simplicity with the idea of Christmas bringing you the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. See, a Christmas love song. Falls right in line with a vast majority of Christmas songs which are holiday flavored love songs.
I had some friends who I gave early copies to for feedback. They all loved it. One played it for other people anonymously for people. Those that apparently knew of my music were able to recognize that it was a song written by me before the vocals even came on. That’s a pretty wild musical fingerprint. To be so ingrained with a certain music DNA that people would recognize who did it before the vocal or even being told who wrote it.
Then another friend heard it and wanted it to be the theme song for his Advent Calendar blog. Which is now the internet’s longest running Advent Calendar blog. It’s an annual thing. I’m always flattered that he contacts me every year to ask about using and getting the permission to do so. Thank you Grant, you are a man among men.
It’s even more fun to hear from fans of the song telling me how it’s become a tradition to play it for their family together times. That their kids ask to hear and sing along. What better feedback is there than that?
Factoids:
1. Written in summer.
2. Took a while to learn to sing and play the guitar at the same time.

Yuletide Romeo
[verse]
The weatherman says it looks like snow
For a white Christmas after all
And every song on my radio
Is telling me to deck the halls
[verse]
I took some paper and grabbed a pen
For a letter long overdue
Although its been awhile since we were friends
I’ve a favor to ask of you
[pre-chorus]
The Christmas lights are winking at me
As though they’ve got secrets to tell
I see happy couples kissing
They remind me what I’m missing
As I walk home by myself
[chorus]
Santa I hope that you can see
What’s missing from my mistletoe
There’s no sign
Of Auld Lang Syne
For a Yuletide Romeo
[verse]
Make her funny, well read and wise
Custom ordered only for me
A little naughty but oh so nice
And delivered Christmas eve
[pre-chorus]
The stars above are winking at me
As they’ve got secrets to tell
I see happy couples kissing
They remind me what I’m missing
As I walk home by myself
[chorus]
Santa I hope that you can see
What’s missing from my mistletoe
There’s no sign
Of Auld Lang Syne
For a Yuletide Romeo
[outro]
There’s no sign
Of Auld Lang Syne
For a Yuletide Romeo

Song Story:
Once upon a time I used to pal around with a bunch of Los Angeles based songwriters via a group called Just Plain Folks. We’d have get togethers from time to time, play songs, jam, go out to eat meals. During which we’d chat about songs we were writing, or the trials and tribulations of the music industry. One year near holiday times of Christmas I hear Kerry Getz play this song. I immediately too a liking to it. Mainly because I hadn’t thought of writing Christmas music.
When I decided to finally pen some Christmas tunes and put an album together, I started looking for tunes to help me flesh out what I was doing. This was one of the first songs where I called Kerry and Stuart and asked if they’d let me do it. They said yes and I set out to record a version in my style. Obviously what you’re hearing is the result.
It’s a more melancholy style of Christmas song based on the viewpoint of someone longing for someone else. Yes, there’s a plethora of Christmas songs where people are longing for someone else. But are they really romantic? This one is, at least to me.
I don’t wish anyone to be lonely during the holidays. But if you find yourself in just such a position (as I have in the past), I’m pretty sure this song will help you soothe that sore spot. Plus it’s got some cool chord changes to boot and a nice little guitar solo from my buddy Chris Hellstrom.
Factoids:
1. Loved hearing my friends play their song so I wanted to cover it.
2. The line about “stars winking at me” is great.

Hey Today Is Christmas Day
[verse]
Hey, Today Is Christmas Day
A day for giving love and for receiving
A day for peace to come and for war leaving
For all time
Hey, won’t you come this way
I’m smiling at the thought of being together
I want to keep you near now and forever
And always
[chorus]
Hey, Today Is Christmas Day
A time when we pray for healing and loving kindness
Say when night blows away these feelings will stay
We’ll make sure our hearts remind us
[verse]
Hey, if you’ll come this way
Our hearts will keep us warm in spite of the weather
I want to feel your soul coming together with mine
[chorus]
Hey, Today Is Christmas Day
A time when we pray for healing and loving kindness
Say when night blows away these feelings will stay
We’ll make sure our hearts remind us
[outro]
Hey, Today Is Christmas Day
A day for giving love and for receiving
A day for peace to come and for war leaving
For all time
So stay mine

Song Story:
This song came about when Johnny and I were chatting about what each of us was up to. He thought it would be a good idea to work on a Christmas song together and I agreed. Which is where it began.
Johnny is the lyricist on this, I only guided a change or two in regard to the words. Generally it happens when the words aren’t very easy to sing. From there Johnny usually let me guide things from the musical end of things. Which is why it felt pertinent to make this a slower more relaxed ballad feel.
Oddly I had a vision in my head of a living room environment where there’s a couple of cozy sitting chairs, a grand love seat and a good sized fireplace. Of course the idea is stockings hanging from the mantle for Santa and a lazy fire that is crackling in the hearth. A cozy evening with It’s a Wonderful Life and a large bowl of buttered popcorn with a lovely Oread sipping drink to go with.
Heartwarming!
Factoids:
1. First of two Christmas songs I’ve written with Johnny Elkins.
2. Never performed this song live.

I Saw Santa Surfing
[verse]
We all know the story of the North Pole and those busy elves
Where does Santa go come spring after all those toys he’s delivering?
Well my vacation to some sandy shores last May opened my mind
To my surprise there was a man of considerable size
[chorus]
I Saw Santa Surfing
Sporting red shorts and a red surfboard
I Saw Santa Surfing
Paddling into big ol’ waves
I Saw Santa Surfing
Getting right up and hanging 10
I Saw Santa Surfing
[verse]
While he was out in the ocean splashing around, on the beach
Mrs. Claus had a drink and was taking pictures of her Jolly man
From under an umbrella trying to avoid getting a deep dark tan
Everything we’ve heard is true they’re very happy those jovial two
[chorus]
I Saw Santa Surfing
Sporting red shorts and a red surfboard
I Saw Santa Surfing
Paddling into big ol’ waves
I Saw Santa Surfing
Getting right up and hanging 10
I Saw Santa Surfing
I Saw Santa Surfing
Sporting red shorts and a red surfboard
I Saw Santa Surfing
Paddling into big ol’ waves
I Saw Santa Surfing
Getting right up and hanging 10
I Saw Santa Surfing
I said I saw I saw I saw
I Saw Santa Surfing
Sporting red shorts and a red surfboard
I Saw Santa Surfing
Paddling into big ol’ waves
I Saw Santa Surfing
Getting right up and hanging 10
I Saw Santa Surfing

Song Story:
This song is me imaging the backstory of Santa and his wife during their off-season. At the time I wrote it, I was thinking it would be super fun to understand what it would be like if the snow met the beach. Therein is where my concept was born.
Due to having a lot of musician friends in other bands and places, I put out the word that I was hoping some friends would want to have some fun playing on some Christmas music. Benny was the first one who answered the call. Which was amazing to me. It was all about hanging out and throwing down some cool ideas, which Benny did in spades. He came to the studio and plugged in and away we went.
There’s an interest backstory between Benny and I, before we even met – however, that will come out in a book at a future date.
Until then, enjoy the California style swing pop of Santa and his Wife taking some time away from the elves and presents.
Factoids:
1. Guitar solo is performed by Lifehouse guitarist Ben Carey.
2. Was the first song I’ve written where I invited another guitar player to solo on.

Christmas at the Isthmas
[intro]
I was bored after Thanksgiving I needed something more
My travel agent mentioned somewhere I’d never been before
He said south of Costa Rica, North of Bogota
Is a lovely little country known as Panama
[verse]
Goodbye Macy’s goodbye baby so long Christmas white
We’ll see how that canal looks all decked out in Christmas lights
I hope those big mosquitoes won’t mess with our libdo’s
By striking where our speedos won’t quite reach
[chorus]
We’re spending Christmas at the Isthmas what a glorious place
Where the jungle meets the ocean and
The sunshine beats upon your face
I can hear those friendly insects singing carols in my ear
Yes it’s Christmas at the Isthmas this year
[verse]
Santa there’s no chimneys no squeezing down that tiny space
In this sweltering humidity who needs a fireplace?
Your complexion will get plundered even with SPF 100
And it makes you stop and wonder how Noriega’s looks so good
[chorus]
It must be Christmas at the Isthmas what a glorious place
Where the jungle meets the ocean and
The sunshine beats upon your face
Santa’s gonna have to put some shades on his reindeer
When he spends Christmas at the Isthmas this year
[bridge]
I could have been to Bethlehem to see the holy city there
Or spend Chanukah in Santa Monica or New Years in Times Square
[verse]
Blame it on the tomburrito or those jungles wet with rain
Or those pigeons dropping guano
Like seasons greetings on my window pane
And the chance to catch malaria inside that canal’s own area
While lost in the hysteria of it all
[chorus]
We’re spending Christmas at the Isthmas what a glorious place
Where the jungle meets the ocean and
The sunshine beats upon your face
Imagine our excitement waking up on Christmas morn
Oh but I think that possibly maybe next year
We’ll just go around cape horn dear
Instead of Christmas at the Isthmas next year
[outro]
Jungle bells, jungle bells, jungle all the way

Song Story:
For those of you who don’t know who Harold Payne is, it would be a good idea to search him out. He’s another one of those songwriters that I met within the songwriter’s organization called Just Plain Folks. He’s filled with amazing stories of people he’s worked with in the industry. Plus he’s amazing at taking a few suggestions from the audience and writing a song live from those suggestions.
One holiday season I heard him pull this song out and play it. To me it was fantastic. Thus when I got knee deep into doing Christmas music it was something I had to put this song on my roadmap. Mainly because I can relate to being in a snowless area for Christmas. Plus I dig the witty nature of his lyrics. He’s a formidable songwriter and has the track record to prove it.
At some point in my life I do hope to get to the Isthmas, and it would be all the better if it were during Christmas.
Factoids:
1. I did a cover of this because I spent a Christmas in Mexico without snow.
2. I’ve never been stung by mosquitos in winter.

Christmas to Unwind
[verse]
Flakes of snow gently fall outside
We’re deep within our favorite chairs alright
A little popcorn, sipping some hot cider
It’s A Wonderful Life is on TV alright
[chorus]
Tonight is between us
On a Christmas to Unwind
And the fire that warms our hearts
On a Christmas to Unwind
[verse]
Cold winds swirl in the hills and trees
Little ones are fast asleep in bed
Our work is a million miles away
Santa is busy spreading out toys alright
[chorus]
Tonight is between us
On a Christmas to Unwind
And the fire that warms our hearts
On a Christmas to Unwind
And these times connect our souls
On a Christmas to Unwind

Song Story:
Pretty sure I’m not the only person in the world that really enjoys slowing down and taking a little time off during the holidays. Which is probably why I get images of living rooms from my childhood, my young school years, and beyond. Which was the impetus behind this other slower more balladic song from this album.
As per the song facts, I did a film at the University of Utah film school as part of my graduating from the U of U. Yes, I went to film school prior to going to music school. Picked two of the most difficult professions in the world eh? The film I did for graduation was a bit of a mockumentary about meter maids. The setting was a friend of mine who played the part of a stodgy know-it-all in a cozy living room with a fire, smoking a pipe and talking about meter maids. Essentially the idea of memes prior to memes actually being a thing.
This song gives me those kinda vibes. Where you’re sitting back in a cozy space with a fire crackling near by. Snow gently falling outside in the mid-evening. Gentle music softly playing and some hot cocoa steaming on the coffee table. Enjoying the evening with a significant other and waiting for Santa to come and pay a visit.
Factoids:
1. Makes me think of my University graduation movie project.
2. The simple nature of the guitar part is actually quite hard.

Song Story:
I figured I needed at least one instrumental track on this album. My imagination went to a story where Scrooge could actually be a bit more modern. There is nothing more to it other than it’s meant to be a flow to make one imagine a miser who forgets his miser-ness.
Factoids:
1. Lots of sampled sounds in this.
2. Last song to be recorded for all 30 tracks in this release.

When Christmas Lights Up
[verse]
I can still feel the winter air upon my cherry cheeks
As the snow creeps through the sky I hold out my tongue
Walking hand in hand with my family on New York streets
Like many others heading to Rockefeller Center
Street vendors out in force with
Chestnuts roasting and hot dogs boiling
And everyone is greeting each other with holiday cheer
On the rink below I can see the skaters gliding effortlessly
My favorite time of the year is summed up in Christmas Eve
[chorus]
There’s a power on all those beaming faces when
Christmas Lights Up
And all those decorations twinkling on the tree when
Christmas Lights Up
[verse]
That Norwegian Spruce gives its hopes to the children everywhere
And with its miles of lights and the shining star in the Big Apple
I could wish to get as many toys as it would bear to hold
But that doesn’t compare in size to the joy that giving brings
[chorus]
There’s a power on all those beaming faces when
Christmas Lights Up
And all those decorations twinkling on the tree when
Christmas Lights Up
There’s a power on all those beaming faces when
Christmas Lights Up
And all those decorations twinkling on the tree when
Christmas Lights Up

Song Story:
I wanted an upbeat style song that would give people nostalgia. Especially myself.
it’s a memory vibe to remember what it was like growing up on the streets of New York. To idealize time spent with parents and what it was like as a kid filtering around in the Big Apple. I do recall some massive winters there as a kid. I remember lots of crazy little things.
Chances are I’m idealizing my own memories. As we all tend to do.
Enjoy your holiday time! Actually enjoy all your family time as best you can.
Factoids:
1. I’ve never eaten a roasted chestnut.
2. I did grow up in New York for my first childhood. I consider that I had 2 childhoods growing up.

Sharing For Christmas
[verse]
I’ve made my list I’m checking it twice
To see which kid has been naughty or nice
I’m off to the Stores I’m getting them gifts
To match my peers and keep it smooth with the wife
[pre-chorus]
Its only mid-December I never remember
Traffic ever being so bad, the malls ever being so packed
[chorus]
Santa’s got it so good as the holiday spirit guide
Sharing for Christmas
Santa’s got so much cheer with those elves by his side
Sharing for Christmas
[verse]
I’ve got the goodies they’re wrapped up to go
I want my wife under the mistletoe
[pre-chorus]
Its only mid-December I never remember
Traffic ever being so bad, the malls ever being so packed
[chorus]
Santa’s got it so good as the holiday spirit guide
Sharing for Christmas
Santa’s got so much cheer with those elves by his side
Sharing for Christmas
Santa’s got it so good as the holiday spirit guide
Sharing for Christmas
Santa’s got so much cheer with those elves by his side
Sharing for Christmas
Santa’s got it so good as the holiday spirit guide
Sharing for Christmas
Santa’s got so much cheer with those elves by his side

Song Story:
Sadly, I tend to be one of those poor saps that will wait to the last minute to find gifts for people. Before online shopping and Amazon became the norm, it was customary to have to hit the malls and mill about in the crowds to find items to give. There’s still a good portion of the U.S. population that will do this. Though I’m not sure the crowds are operating the same way.
While I wrote about wives and kids, neither of which I have experience with, I had a good number of friends at the time who did. Nothing like using other’s gripes to make light of the human condition and the generally ever present idea of the hustle and bustle of the holiday gift finding journey.
Here’s where the cognitive dissonance gets wild. I’m not a giant fan of the over commercialization of Santa and gifts. It’s even worse that we’re beginning to endure more of Christmas starting literally the day of Halloween or the day after. Maybe my memories from childhood are marred, but I believe back then Christmas music and the barrage of gift giving didn’t happen until after Thanksgiving. That is still my ideal. Wait until after Thanksgiving!
Despite my wishful thinking, I do realize it’s a goal many of us would appreciate and yet is likely not realistic in our ever hectic world. In the meantime – enjoy the sonic pop rock fun I’ve given you.
Factoids:
1. I never shop for things way ahead of time.
2. I’ve yet to be married for a holiday.

We’d Like to Wish You
[intro]
Ooh
Let’s all live
Ooh
[verse]
Silent little white miracles
Spread their way across the land
This peaceful longing reminds us
Winter is here Santa is close at hand
About the house without stirring a mouse
Our man of mystery bears a gift or three
For those who’ve not been naughty
Regardless of fate its done without hate
Then he’s up the flue faster than anyone can move
[chorus]
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas
We love having you here
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas
We love having you here
[bridge]
I am a poor boy I have no gift to bring
But can I play for you on my drum
I’ll play my drum for you I’ll play my best for you
Then you can smile with me and my drum
[verse]
Those sleigh bells ring and the chimney sings
One can never spread enough care
Though it’s the heart that brings all those meaningful things
Joy and love and wonderful times to share
[chorus]
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas
We love having you here
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas
We love having you here
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas (silent night)
We love having you here (holy night)
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas (silent night)
We love having you here (holy night)
[outro]
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas (sleigh bells ring)
We love having you here (are you listening)
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas (sleigh bells ring)
We love having you here (snow is glistening)
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas (sleigh bells ring)
We love having you here (here comes Santa Claus)
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas (sleigh bells ring)
We love having you here (are you listening)
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas (sleigh bells ring)
We love having you here (snow is glistening)
We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas (sleigh bells ring)
We love having you here (here comes Santa Claus)

Song Story:
One year while living in Santa Clarita with Jeff Scott Soto, I had this bizarre notion that it would be cool to create an audio gift card to give to every person I was going to give a gift too. This idea was a bit before the idea of how South Park started, their history begins with Matt and Trey creating an animated video card to give to execs. My reason for it was to be able to give an extra gift with nothing more than my time to write, record and put it on mini CDs. Mini CDs were a pretty neat idea at the time, but never really took off.
At the time I wrote, I was a sometimes collaborator with Jeff Van Dyke. He and I met some how online while he was living in Australia. I assume he’s still there. We haven’t spoken in quite some time. If you’re into video games, it’s a good chance he may have written the soundtrack. He was a wiz at drum programming back then – so I approached him asking if he’d be interested in doing some drum programming for me, which he graciously did.
I didn’t have a clear direction for the song it ended up with me trying all kinds of ideas and concepts. Each section of the song was its own beast. It was an abstract journey from each holiday idea and I attempted to shoehorn as many of them in there as I could. Which is painfully obvious that I did.
For some reason I stayed attached to this song. It’s a got certain je ne sais qoi to it that is quite naive and at the same time, endearing, despite it’s disjointed nature.
Would you send it as an audio gift card?
Factoids:
1. Written years before I thought of doing the 3 CD set.
2. Vast majority of the recording is from the demo I originally did.
